Growing up school/education was about getting out of my community and finding an opportunity to change your situation or circumstances. As a teacher, I wanted my students to have access, opportunities, and a positive example in the classroom to whom they could identify and relate. Unfortunately, I felt that as a teacher I wasn’t able to provide my students with the support that they needed outside the classroom that would ultimately help their overall improvement inside the classroom. I then realized that I needed to make a change that would not only help my students in the classroom but also help and nurture the entire student. I was once told by a great philosopher, educator, and mentor that in order to reach a child's brain (educate them) we must first reach them through their heart(well-being). That statement took root in my soul and it became a purpose for my life to reach their heart(well-being) and well as their brain(educate them).
